Marine & FuelEU
Bio-LNG and biofuel bunkering, compliance pooling, and documentation a verifier will accept. Three things a shipowner needs from the same counterparty.
What FuelEU actually asks of you
Since January 2025, FuelEU Maritime requires the greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used on board to fall against a 2020 baseline — a small cut at first, tightening every five years until 2050. It applies to ships above 5,000 gross tonnes calling at EU and EEA ports, and it is measured well-to-wake, so what happened before the fuel reached the tank counts.
Compliance is expressed as a balance rather than a pass or fail. A surplus can be carried forward, a deficit can be borrowed against the following period within limits, and — the part most owners under-use — ships can be pooled so that a surplus on one vessel covers a deficit on another. An uncorrected deficit attracts a penalty, and it compounds the longer it is left.
What we do
Three services, one counterparty
Most owners buy the fuel from one company, the compliance position from another, and then spend the winter reconciling the two. We would rather you did not have to.
Bio-LNG and biofuel bunkering
Physical supply alongside, by bunker barge or truck-to-ship, with the sustainability documentation issued at the same time as the bunker delivery note. Bio-LNG drops into an existing LNG-fuelled vessel with no modification; biodiesel blends into conventional bunkers.
Pool management
FuelEU lets ships combine their compliance balances, so a vessel in surplus can cover one in deficit. We arrange and administer those pools — matching counterparties, agreeing the commercial terms, and handling the registry mechanics so the balance ends the period where it should.
Compliance documentation
A well-to-wake figure is only worth what its evidence is worth. Every delivery carries an ISCC EU proof of sustainability with the feedstock, the GHG intensity and the chain of custody stated — in the form your verifier expects, not a spreadsheet.
Pooling
How a pool actually works
It is less complicated than it sounds, and it is usually the cheapest compliance you will buy all year.
- We size the gap — your fleet’s expected balance for the period, vessel by vessel
- We find the counterparty — a surplus that fits, at a price that beats the penalty
- We paper it — pooling agreement, allocation and the registry entries
- Or we close it with molecules — bunkering bio-LNG or biofuel instead of buying a position
- Often both — physical supply where the vessel trades, pooling for the remainder
- Reporting that survives verification, because the evidence was collected as you went
